California is the nation’s most efficient state in terms of per capita electricity consumption.

Since 1973, per capita electricity consumption in the United States increased by 50 percent, while, remarkably, per capita use in California held constant. Much of this is likely the direct result of the state’s efforts to fund and promote energy efficiency through programs and enactment of more stringent state standards. It is estimated that over the past 25 years these programs and policies have resulted in savings of 9,000 megawatts and 2 billion therms.

Yet, significant energy savings potential remains. For electricity, this study, “California Statewide Residential Sector Energy Efficiency Potential” finds that the more than $520 million currently proposed to be spent on programs to promote efficiency in California’s residential sector over the next 10 years will yield roughly $1.9 billion in electricity cost savings … download full report
